An Overview Of The Rhone River


 

The Rhone River is a beautiful river located in both Switzerland and France. It starts in the Alps Mountains and near Arles splits into the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône before finishing its course into the impressive Mediterranean Sea.  Cruising in the Rhone River is great for gardeners, wine enthusiast, foodies, those who enjoy history, and travelers who appreciate the greater things in life with magnificent views.


If you enjoy the taste of a good wine or just love wine, the Rhone river is a great river to cruise on as there are many wineries, especially in Châteauneuf-du-Pape which is part of the Rhone Valley Wine Region. The Rhone Valley Wine Region extends from Lyon to the Rhône Delta. Wine was introduced from the Greeks and Romans. They grew vineyards and today wine continues to be a favorite in this region. Pro tip: Do an excursion that includes a wine tasting at the winery.


Foodies can enjoy the unique excursion of truffle hunting. Southern France is the perfect geographical location to try this. Along the Rhone River, you can do this in the quaint medieval town of Viviers. Truffles are a fungus that goes on the roots of tree and considered a delicacy. They are found with the help of trained truffle hunting dogs who have an excellent sense of smell.


Foodies will also be happy to hear that Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France. Many river cruises will begin or end in here. Lyon is France’s third largest city. Lyon famous dishes include Quenelles, a creamed meat or fish in a pastry; Salade Lyonnaise (lettuce, bacon, and egg), Tablier de sapeur (steak in white wine), and more. If you love learning about history then, in Lyon you can see remnants of Rome ancient past like Theatres Romains de Fourvière. This UNESCO Heritage site is home to three different Roman sites. Bonus: If you visit during the summer you can be a part of Nuits de Fourviee One of the most recognizable sites in Lyon is the  Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière. With its high vantage point on the hill, it can be seen from almost anywhere in France. It was built between 1872 and 1896.

Avignon was the Papal capital during the 14th century. Palais des Papes  is the largest surviving Gothic Palace in Europe.  Travelers who love art should not miss Petite Palais Museum where you can see medieval paintings. Pro tip: Visit Petite Palais Museum before heading to Palais des Papes  Avignon is also know for its bridge.
