The port of Miami, more commonly known as PortMiami is the busiest passenger cruise port in the world. In fact, it calls itself the cruise capital of the world. This article will cover how to get to the port, some fun facts about the port, and a bit of history.
How to get to PortMiami
As a reminder, you should always arrive at your departure port at least one day earlier then your departure date.
There are three main options to get to the PortMiami.
1. If you are staying at a hotel the night prior to your departure, you may be able to utilize a group shuttle running from the hotel to the port. If the hotel doesn’t offer a shuttle, there are plenty of alternative options, such as Uber and Lyft.
2. If you are coming to the port from another city in Florida (like Orlando) the Brightline could be an alternative option. The Brightline is a high speed passenger train. Once you get off the train, take an Uber of Lyft to PortMiami.
3. Lastly, you can park at PortMiami. As parking at the Port of Miami is a little harder to do compared to some of the other ports in the US, here is link for supplemental information on the process of parking at the port.
Your cruise documents will provide you with which of the nine terminals your ship will be docked at. It is also worth noting that you cannot walk to access the port.

Having a cruise port in “your backyard” is a huge advantage for the major cruise companies. Here are the companies who have a major presence in Miami:
1. Royal Caribbean (RCL)- owns Silverseas, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruise Line
2. Norwegian (NCL) - owns Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceana

4. Carnival Corporation (CCL) - owns Seabourn, Princess Cruise Lines, Holland America, and Carnival Cruise Lines
In 2023, PortMiami regained the title of the busiest cruise port in the world.
PortMiami also allows for shore power. Shore power allows the ships to plug into landside electrical power instead of having to generate power on their own Because cruise ships can use as much electricity as a small city, having shower power allowing for cleaner energy to run the cruise ships. As of the publication of this article, up to three ships can plug in at a time and make use of the shore power.
PortMiami was the first port to host a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Global Entry Enrollment Center.
Henry Flagler dredged a channel in 1897, for cargo ships. The first passengers started arriving in 1968. Today, more than 5 million passengers board cruise ships from Port Miami each year.
PortMiami was built on Dodge, Lummus and Sam's Islands which were combined into Dodge Island.
