River Cruising on the Chobe River

The Chobe River runs through the northern part of Botswana’s Chobe National Park. It is the perfect river for travelers who love both nature and animals. The park itself is known for its large herds of both buffalo and elephants. Both of which you will spot near the Chobe River, especially during the dry season. FYI: Dry season is typically April/May through October.

Because so many animals will gather near the Chobe River, river cruising is the optimal way to see these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. River cruise ships here are designed specifically for optimal wildlife viewing. The river cruise ships in the Chobe are going to be a much smaller, intimate experience compared to rivers in other parts of the world. The typical river cruise vessel holds 28 passengers.

Note: The Chobe River is not meant for swimming as there are crocodiles, hippos, and other animals in the water. However, being on a river cruise allows you to get really close to them! And if you want to get even closer to wildlife, many river cruise boats have a smaller boat to take on the river for that up close and personal view. It is truly a unique experience that you will talk about for years and years.

For some geography of the Chobe River: The Chobe River forms the boundary between Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is actually part of a much larger river, Cuando River. The Cuando River spits between the Chobe River and Linyati River. The Chobe River eventually flows into the Zambezi River.

For birding enthusiasts, the best time to visit is the web summer months. There are 500 species of birds that will visit the Chobe River. Bonus: During the wet months not only will you see migrant birds, but it is when antelopes start having their babies. Besides birds, here is a small sample of the animals you may see during a Chobe River Cruise:

  • Jackals

  • Leopards

  • Hyenas

  • Giraffes

  • Baboons

  • Impalas

  • Lions

  • And more

Most river cruises on the Chobe river will include a land package to extend the fun. There are several to choose from depending on what you want to see. For example, if you go to Rwanda you can meet Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Or maybe you prefer to visit Victoria Falls, one of the Seven National Wonders of the World. Perhaps a ride in through a private game reserve in Kruger National Park is more your style. If you want to learn more about history, you can trace the steps of Nelson Mandela. River Cruise packages are from 9 to 18 nights depending on how long you are able to step away from home. Many river cruise packages will start and/or end in Johannesburg or Cape Town. And if you are looking at the map, there are short flights you will take for the land portion before embarking on your once in a lifetime river cruise.

There are so many options to enjoy and learn about the beautiful animals, history, and simply take in the gorgeous views. Markwood Magic would love to help you find the perfect river cruise to enjoy the Chobe River. Click the button below to schedule a consultation.
