Stay Dry While Traveling: What To Pack For Vacation

No matter where you are traveling, there is a possibility it might rain. This article will detail what to pack to help you stay dry while traveling.

Waterproof Jacket Invest in a waterproof jacket. The jacket should be breathable and not too heavy.  Look for a jacket with zippered pockets on the inside so you have a place to keep valuables. The jacket should also have a hood to help keep you dry. For a classic more stylish jacket look for one in natural colors. Bonus points if it cinches at the waist.

Layers Pack with layers. Usually, the rain brings in a cold front which can result in a change in temperatures. Make sure to have layers to be prepared if the temperature does fluctuate before/after the rain.

Color Choices This goes without saying, while white pants or pastel dresses may be perfect for a sunny day, if there is rain in the forecast, wearing these colors should be avoided. White, pastel, and other light colors are more susceptible to showing mud or becoming more see through than desired. Instead choose clothing that has darker colors.

Waterproof Shoes/Footwear Wet feet can quickly make a day miserable and increase the chance of blisters. Waterproof shoes, such as ankle boots, hiking shoes, or sneakers with a water-resistant coating, can help keep feet dry. If heavy rain is expected, pack an extra pair of socks to change into when needed. If you do not own waterproof shoes, then bring at least one extra pair of sneakers so you can change them out once you are back at your hotel room or cruise cabin. Bonus: If sneakers are wet, consider taking the inside cushion and place near the sun or air conditioning vent to help the shoe dry faster.

Water Resistant Bag For those that plan to travel a lot, invest in a water-resistant bag as it can be used repeatedly. Items like charging cables, passport, and more can be put in the water-resistant bag during travel. While not as environmentally friendly, an alternative for travelers that do not travel as often is to use a Ziplock bag.

Fabric Weight  The right pair of jeans can be incredibly comfortable. Unfortunately, they do not dry very quick. The heavier fabric simply takes longer to dry. Consider bringing items that dry faster such as leggings, dresses, or pants made out of polyester, nylon, or wool.

Additional Items To Consider Packing

Blue and white umbrellas with wooden handles are stored in a silver stand near a window with view of greenery, on a tiled floor.

Travel Umbrella

There are mixed reviews about a travel umbrella. The downside is that they can be bulky and need to dry out. If it is too windy they might not be as effective. The upside to a travel umbrella is that in addition to shielding you from the rain, it can also block the sun when the weather is nicer outside and reduce the risk of a sunburn.  Many times umbrellas may be in the closet at when staying at a higher end accomodation.

Compact Portable Clothesline If going swimming while on vacation or clothes get wet from the rain, a portable clothesline makes life a little bit easier. Prior to hanging items on a clothesline, roll the item in a towel to absorb any excess moisture. If possible, put the clothesline in a well-ventilated area or in the sun. This will help the clothing items dry a bit faster.
