All your adult children have completed their higher education and they now in the work force. Can family vacation still happen? Absolutely. So the next question you are asking is: When is the best time to schedule that vacation at this phase in their life? Lets address that and assume that there are no grandchildren for this article
Limited PTO Days
One thing to consider is how many PTO (paid time off) days the adult child has. In many corporations the younger workers do not have as many days off as their more veteran colleagues. If they do not have many available PTO days – maximize them by taking vacation around one of their corporate holidays and/or bookending the weekend.
School Calendar If limited PTO days is not a factor for your family, try to avoid traveling during school holidays. This can include Fall Break, President’s Break, December Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break. You no longer have be bound by the school calendar, unless one of the family members works in education. Even if you are traveling to an adults only destination, airfair and pre-cruise or tour resorts could price higher due the increase of travelers across the board. Traveling during the traditional school year will typically yield lower crowds and lower prices.
Other Work Obligations
What major projects does your adult child’s company have coming up. Are there certain periods of the month or quarter where it is easier to get away from the office? For example if you are in accounting, month end, quarter end, and year end it may not be the best time for that vacation.
Note: If your adult child has a significant other who might be joining, consider that person's schedule and other obligations as well when picking out the date.
How often do these vacations occur? This can vary and will vary by family. Many travelers like to do a big family vacation every year or every other year.
